About the Network Theory Applied Research Institute
Our Mission
The Network Theory Applied Research Institute, Inc. (NTARI) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to developing systems, protocols, and programs for online global cooperatives inspired by network theory. We bridge the gap between theoretical research and practical applications, creating innovative solutions that enhance social connectivity and economic opportunity for internet users worldwide.
Who We Are
Founded by Jodson and Grace Graves, NTARI brings together researchers, developers, and volunteers committed to applying network theory principles to real-world challenges. Our institute operates at the intersection of technology, social science, and community engagement, working to create more equitable, resilient, and accessible online ecosystems.
Our Programs
Forge Lab
Our flagship software development program that transforms network theory research into practical software applications. Forge Lab creates open-source tools, platforms, and frameworks that empower communities to build more equitable and resilient online ecosystems. The program includes projects like:
-
Agrinet Project: An open-source, federated agricultural trading and service platform built to enhance transparency, trust, and efficiency in agricultural markets.
Network Society Program
A global citizen research initiative that democratizes network theory research through volunteer engagement. This program facilitates community-driven research, service projects, and knowledge creation that advance understanding of network dynamics across disciplines. Projects include:
-
Democracy Console Project: Developing civic participation software that meets or exceeds US Election Assistance Commission standards.
-
Êţÿmø Channel: Our multilingual bridge that facilitates translation of organizational content while exploring the network dynamics of language translation.
-
Muerte y Café: Exploring the history of network theory through the lens of coffee house culture
Node.Nexus
Our digital knowledge repository and publication platform that collects, organizes, and distributes multimedia research outputs generated through our volunteer channels. Node.Nexus transforms volunteer contributions into accessible, peer-reviewed publications advancing public understanding of network theory applications.
Our Approach
NTARI applies network theory—the study of complex systems through their connections and relationships—to develop innovative solutions for global challenges. We believe that by understanding the world as interconnected networks, we can create more effective systems for collaboration, resource distribution, and community building.
Our work is guided by key principles:
-
Open Source: We release our code and research under appropriate open-source licenses
-
Accessibility: Our systems are designed to be usable by people with diverse abilities and backgrounds
-
Transparency: We document our decision-making processes and system operations
-
Inclusivity: We design for diverse communities and reduce barriers to participation
-
Public Benefit: We prioritize collective benefit over individual profit
