Seretonin plays a role in social functions in more than just humans. Locusts and other swarm or herd animals also experience seretonin level increases when in proximity or highly concentrated. In terms of physical network formation seretonin-- families, tribes, nations, etc.-- seretonin and its causes seem to be key.
